Position: deep or partial shadeSoil: humus-rich, moist, well-drained soilRate of growth: averageFlowering period: AprilHardiness: fully hardyThe trillium is a simple perennial that is a real feature of the spring woodland. As the name suggests, the leaves, petals and flower sepals all come in groups of three. A straight, bare stem is topped by three dark green, hosta-like leaves that are mottled with purple. On top of this three-leaf whorl sits a dark maroon (occasionally white or yellow) flower with clawed petals and three reflexed (turned downwards) sepals. It is a beautiful and unusual plant.Garden care:Plant rhizomes 5cm deep and 5cm apart in autumn. Once planted they are best left undisturbed so they can build up their numbers. Mulch in the autumn with a generous layer of leafmould.
