When we last saw our heroes, Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin) were lost in the hills of Emyn Muil pursued by Gollum (Andy Serkis). Originally named Smeagol, Gollum was once a member of a Hobbit group that lived along the banks of the River Anduin, who first came into contact with the Ring as a boy and was immediately enamoured by the Ring's beauty (and unknowingly influenced by its malignant power). He retreated to the caves under the mountains where he remained for many centuries consumed by his passion for the Ring. He later lost the Ring near the tunnels in the Orc lairs under the Misty Mountains where it was found by Bilbo Baggins. Obsessed by wanting the Ring back, Gollum offers to serve as guide to Frodo and Sam. Across Middle-earth the body of Boromir (Sean Bean), who died bravely defending Pippin and Merry from the Orcs, floats down the Great River in one of the elfin boats. Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), the Elf archer Legolas (Orlando Bloom) and Gimli the Dwarf (John Rhys-Davies), arrive at the besieged Kingdom of Rohan. There, they discover that the once great King Theoden has fallen under the deadly spell of the evil wizard Saruman The White (Christopher Lee). Meanwhile Merry (Dominic Monaghan) and Pippin (Billy Boyd) manage to escape from their Uruk-hai captors into the mysterious Fangorn Forest. In secret, Saruman has bred a new race of Orcs - the Fighting Uruk-hai of the White Hand are large and stand more erect then their brethren in Mordor and... they can withstand the light of day. Ten thousand strong, they are ready to march on Rohan's stronghold of Helm's Deep. The battle for Middle-earth begins. (c) MMII New Line Productions, Inc. (c) MMIII New Line Home Entertainment, Inc.
